Having a Better Golf Swing
The first time you hold a golf club, you may get that feeling
of wanting to hit the ball as hard as possible, completely
knocking the cover right off. Being able to use a lot of
strength behind your swing and hitting the ball can be
exhilarating. However, just because you can hit the ball as
hard as possible does not mean you will have a good golf game.
It may be a good way to relieve some stress and work out some
unwanted emotions, but it will not accomplish your goals of
having a great golf game. Playing golf well has more to do it
with knowing when to use that strength and when to hold back a
little.
Which means one of the biggest mistakes that new golfers make
is hitting the ball too hard. Being able to hit the ball hard
does not mean that you have accuracy in your swing. Accuracy
is of course much more important in the game of golf. Being
able to relax when you are swinging will lessen the power
behind the swing, however you will also have better chance of
achieving the strike you are looking for with the ball.
Placing your feet closer together will also limit the amount
of power behind your swing. When you become tense, you end
putting too much force again into the swing.
Also, your center of gravity becomes very important as well.
Making sure you keep your center of gravity stationary and
keeping your head down and still is equally important. Keeping
your feet in the same place throughout the entire swing will
also improve your stability. When you move your body about and
jerk your body around, you are not focusing on the ball; your
head will move and break your concentration. Every time you
move you are changing your center of gravity and your focus.
It is very important to keep your feet firmly planted and all
your weight will be concentrated in your feet while swinging
and taking aim.
Using as little effort as possible is actually the goal when
playing golf. Your swings should be smooth and easy when
hitting the ball. Tensing up right before hitting the ball
will throw off your balance. The club and club head should go
in a straight line when making contact with the golf ball.
Improving your slicing works in a similar way. Stay centered
on the ball and try to hit it low, sending the ball too high
will leave it vulnerable to the wind and going left or right
onto rough ground.
Remember that using only the power necessary is what is most
important when playing golf. Accuracy is always going to be
more important that power. To be able to control every aspect
of your swing when you hit the ball cleanly will improve your
golf game and your ball will go where you want it to. You will
achieve the distance you need when you make a clean and smooth
hit. It will have less to do with the force of your swing and
more to do with your smooth swinging.
Lastly, you will want to be able to increase your speed as
well. Hit the ball solidly with your golf swing and having
speed behind the swing is much more important. Smooth swings
are also achieved by keeping your hands and arms relaxed, but
not moving them or pulling them away during the swing. You
will achieve fluidity in your swing if you keep your head
down, eyes on the ball, stay relaxed, and do not jerk head or
arms while swinging. |
